A memory popped up today of this whimsical piece, Dragon Lucky by Hung Yi, welcoming visitors at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco years ago. It’s such a delight! Every angle is amazing, covered with colorful symbols of luck and happiness. The form refers to the Chinese myth of the persevering carp that leaps the waterfall to transform into a dragon.
This piece also feels connected to my life. I was familiar with the folklore, having previously developed a brand identity based on it that remains one of the most beautiful and resonant concepts I ever created. Then, not long after seeing it in San Francisco, I traveled to Taiwan, where the artist is from. The apartment building we stayed at in Taipei had unmistakably similar ducks out front — indeed, by the same artist! Lucky coincidences….
