A rainy morning in Salt Lake City yielded to a sunny afternoon, perfect for an outing to the Utah State Capitol Building. This rotunda is one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen! The gracefully echoing circles and arches sooth to my design soul, and the WPA murals remain wonderfully vibrant.

As in many large buildings, our sense of scale is wildly off. The dome mural includes barely visible seagulls against the sky and clouds — the tour guide said the gulls are 6 feet across, which is unfathomable from the ground. The chandelier appears dainty, yet it weights 1,000 pounds! Its 95-foot chain is an additional 5,000 pounds. That is 3 tons of chandelier.
